It was discovered by Lyudmila Chernykh at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in Nauchnyj on 11 August 1969.〔 It orbits the Sun at a distance of 2.9–3.6 AU once every 5 years and 9 months (2,106 days). The C-type asteroid has an albedo of 0.074 as measured by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite, IRAS, while observation by Akari and NEOWISE gave 0.097 and 0.068, respectively. It takes 13.6 hours to rotate around its axis.〔 The asteroid was named in honor of Czech astronomer Antonín Mrkos (1918–1996), a prolific discoverer of 273 minor planets and well known for his contributions to cometary astronomy.
